A New Sensory Garden

Newfield Specialist School is a non denominational school in Blackburn, which provides high quality specialist education for young people aged from 2 to 19 years.  The school meets the needs of its pupils and students who have a wide range of learning difficulties, including autism, complex medical needs and sensory impairments.

Creating a Sensory Area to Encourage Outdoor Activities

The school had an area that was perfect for redevelopment.  The staff  had some plans and ideas to create a sensory area for the children to encourage outdoor activities.  That’s when they contacted Let’s Play to help with the design and implementation of the project as we had already installed some outdoor gym equipment, which went down really well with the young people at this school.

After initial consultations with the group involved with the project, we came up with an amazing design for the sensory area that included a textured sensory pathway with lots of different sections including a rainbow design, resin bonded gravel, Indian paving, and even a log pathway.  This sensory path gives different feels and looks as you travel around the path whether it is on foot or in a wheelchair.  Leading up to the area is a lovely living willow tunnel.

It is the perfect entrance to the new sensory garden at Newfield Specialist School.   An important part of our design included a new pond area to encourage nature and wildlife with a hand made bridge that will make pond dipping even more fun. There is a lovely story telling area with a story telling chair, hand carved mushroom seats and resin bonded rubber mulch on the floor to make it a really inviting area to come and enjoy some good stories.  The centre piece of the new area is this amazing grass covered pod.

Inside the pod is more evergreen grass surrounding the coloured windows and on the floor.  This really is a fairy tale come true.   Along the sensory pathway our talented builders created an amazing curved stone bench.  This is a really great place to sit and enjoy the different aspects of the new area.

The school have now got an outdoor area that has lots of different aspects to encourage learning and exploring the outdoors but in a safe and controlled environment.  The garden will also develop as time goes by with the plants growing and the willow tunnel blooming all summer long.
